Taix French Restaurant announced a permanent closure date last week, reports the Eastsider. March 29 will mark the end of a long era for classic French cuisine in an Echo Park historic building, as well as the beginning of construction for a forthcoming multi-use building on Sunset Boulevard. Taix first opened in Los Angeles in 1927 before settling into its present structure with a banquet hall, multiple dining rooms, and an expansive lounge in 1962, one block away from Echo Park Lake.

Since 2019, questions have surrounded Taix’s future. That year, owner Mike Taix told employees that his family sold the property as part of redevelopment and promised to retain key parts of the restaurant. Though the restaurant was designated a historic monument in 2021, the classification did not protect the building from demolition. The Eastsider also confirmed that the Holland Partner Group will build a six-story complex comprising 166 housing units and a massive retail space on the ground floor, and offer 24 low-income residential units. When construction is complete in slightly under four years, the new structure will include a new Taix with a patio.

Providence chef to judge Padma Lakshmi’s new show

Former Top Chef and Taste The Nation host Padma Lakshmi will host a new culinary competition series that premieres on March 4, 2026. Chefs will compete on America’s Culinary Cup for a $1 million prize with chef judges Michael Cimarusti of Providence restaurant and Wylie Dufresne. The show will stream on CBS and Paramount+.

NORMS x Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die promotion

For Gore Verbinski’s forthcoming film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, NORMS introduced two new menu items available at all locations from February 2 to 28. Hotcakes will be topped with a Hostess Snoball, strawberries, cheesecake batter, and chocolate. Prepare for the impending blood sugar spike before sipping the Hostess Snoball milkshake.

New residency at Maydan Market

Chef Gian Scott will be the newest addition to Mayday Market’s rotating residency. At Rubie, Scott will serve a Caribbean diasporic menu with California influences for lunch and dinner, with dishes that may include pickled okra tempura; gluten-free lentil pastelón; jerk heirloom chicken grilled over yucca charcoal alongside butter beans, citrus salad, and a croquette; and Pacific rockfish rundown with coconut, yam, Scotch bonnet, pikliz, and herbs. Sweeter treats like vanilla rum ice cream with blue cornmeal festival and pops of sorghum will show up for dessert.

Silver Lake’s Bar Siesta launched weekend brunch in early January. Offerings include buñuelos with cinnamon sugar and a spin on French toast called challah torrijas, made using Bub & Grandma’s challah.

Head to Bread Head’s Manhattan Beach location to try its new breakfast menu, which includes a breakfast burrito, a sandwich with smoked salmon, or an early morning sando layered with Nueske’s Bacon, eggs, cheese, and Calabrian mayonnaise.

Taix French Restaurant has been a Los Angeles Downtown area landmark since 1927, and has long been known for its generous portions at moderate prices.
