TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Seven months ago, Ohioans voted yes to Issue 2, legalizing adult-use, or recreational marijuana.

The law went into effect in December, but dispensaries couldn’t start selling that quickly.

Similar to when Michigan legalized recreational pot, medical marijuana dispensaries in Ohio have to obtain a new kind of license to sell non-medical weed.

It’s called a dual-use license, and only current medical marijuana licensees can apply to convert their current license to a dual-use.

Applications opened on June 7, and according to the Ohio Department of Commerce’s public information officer, as of Friday at noon 219 applications have been filed to convert active medical marijuana licensees to dual-use cannabis licensees.

The public information officer, Jamie Crawford, wrote that so far, the Division of Cannabis Control told eight facilities, including testing labs, cultivators, and processors that they qualify for a provisional license.

The division is prioritizing these types of facilities over dispensaries so the industry can have the supply to meet the demand.

So far no dispensaries have been issued a dual-use provisional license for non-medical sales, according to Crawford, but “the Division continues to review and process applications roughly in the order in which completed applications have been received, and will continue to prioritize testing labs, cultivators and processors.”
