The Zips and the Billikens faced off in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal last season, with St. Louis coming away with a 3-2 victory after scoring three unanswered goals all in the second half. The teams also squared off in the regular season, as Akron won, 3-0, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Earlier in the week, Akron faced No. 18 Cornell and came away with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Big Red. The Zips found themselves down twice in the match, but freshman Leo Morana scored his first collegiate goal with 59 seconds left to seal the win.
Saturday’s contest will be the 16th meeting between Saint Louis and Akron. SLU leads the series, 9-5-1, which dates back to 1960. Prior to the NCAA Tournament match, Akron went 4-0-1 against the Billikens in their previous five matches.
