Jon-Eric Sullivan Named New Miami Dolphins GM

Meet Jon-Eric Sullivan, the new Miami Dolphins GM with a rich football background and a reputation for being concise and decisive.

The Miami Dolphins are shopping for a new head football coach.

Mike McDaniel‘s firing on Jan. 8 was the first step and the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager was the second step.

Now, it’s on to contacting prospective coaches and setting up interviews.

The whale in the room is John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Baltimore Ravens this week. There are reports that the Dolphins have contacted Harbaugh, who also is high on the list of several other teams seeking coaches, including the New York Giants.

Harbaugh has said he will trim his list to three or four NFL teams before starting interview talks after the weekend. He reportedly plans to take a measured approach.

The Dolphins also reportedly have contacted several other candidates and have started the interview process.

Here is the latest news:

Klint Kubiak, the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, interviewed with the Dolphins on Jan. 10, the team announced.

As the NFC’s top seed, the Seahawks have a bye this weekend. According to NFL hiring rules, a head coaching interview with a coordinator of a playoff team on a bye must be held virtually. Klint Kubiak is the son of former Broncos and Texans head coach Gary Kubiak and has been coaching on the pro and collegiate level for the last 15 years.

Robert Saleh, Kevin Stefanski, Chris Shula also on Dolphins’ list

Other coaches who reportedly have been contacted by the Dolphins:

  • Robert Saleh. Currently the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, Saleh was the Jets head coach from 2021-24. The Niners play at the Eagles in a wild-card playoff game on Jan. 11.
  • Kevin Stefanski. Fired as the Cleveland Browns head coach on the NFL’s “Black Monday,” he’s also reportedly interviewing with the Tennessee Titans.
  • Chris Shula. Grandson of Don Shula, son of David Shula, Chris is the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator. The Rams play at the Carolina Panthers on Jan. 10.

Also, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile is expected to receive interview requests from teams looking for head coaches. He was the Packers‘ linebackers coach/run game coordinator in 2024 and has ties to Sullivan.

Mike McDaniel might not be out of work for long

McDaniel has been linked to the Titans job and apparently will be getting an interview.

There also is obvious speculation that some team would seek to hire McDaniel as its offensive coordinator or some position on offense since that is what he was doing for San Francisco when Miami hired him.

Ex-Dolphins assistant Darren Rizzi interviewing with Giants

Darren Rizzi, Broncos’ special teams coordinator and a former Miami assistant, is interviewing virtually with the Giants on Jan. 10. Denver is the AFC’s top seed and, thus, has a bye this weekend.
