Thought the Los Angeles Dodgers would stop spending after landing star reliever Tanner Scott last weekend? Think again.

The Dodgers, who gave Scott a four-year, $72 million contract, are nearing a deal will fellow top reliever Kirby Yates, according to multiple reports. USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale was the first to report the news.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who already have folks screaming about their payroll, have reached a tentative agreement with free-agent closer Kirby Yates, pending a physical,” Nightengale wrote Tuesday on the X platform.

Insiders Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman corroborated Nightengale’s reporting.

“Free-agent reliever Kirby Yates in serious discussions with Dodgers, source tells The Athletic,” Rosenthal wrote.

Heyman added: “Superteam Dodgers are moving closer to signing star reliever Kirby Yates, too. Not official yet but looking very likely.”

Los Angeles also signed star Japanese pitching prospect Roki Sasaki last week. The defending World Series champions are projected to have the largest payroll in Major League Baseball by a wide margin.

Yates, 37, posted a 1.17 ERA with 33 saves in 61 appearances last season for the Texas Rangers.
