Montreal Canadiens Announce NHL’s First-Ever Angine de Poitrine Night

As videos of enigmatic Canadian math-rock duo Angine de Poitrine flood social media, the band is set to be honored with one of the country’s highest honors. On April 7th, the Montreal Canadiens will host the National Hockey League (NHL)’s first-ever official Angine de Poitrine night.

Artist and musician-focused theme nights have started popping up throughout the NHL in recent years, with teams celebrating the music of Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Buffett, and Phish. Angine de Poitrine is by far the newest band to get the theme-night treatment, joining the ranks of those artists who are nearly all Rock & Roll Hall of Famers.

The inaugural Angine de Poitrine Night will take place on Tuesday as the Canadiens face off against the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre in Quebec. Coincidentally, the Florida Panthers were also rumored to be planning an Angine de Poitrine night—not out of any connection to the band, but rather in an attempt to siphon some of the online fascination with microtonal outfit to attract a few fans out to see the Atlantic Division’s last-place team.

Fans are encouraged to dress up for Angine de Poitrine night in black and white polka-dots. The first 5,000 attendees will receive upside-down pyramid headgear in the style of Khn De Poitrine. While there aren’t any Angine de Poitrine cover bands (yet), the arena will simulate the AdP experience by playing a worn CD copy of Primus‘ Sailing the Seas of Cheese that skips between periods.

The arena will also serve Angine de Poutine, a twist on the Canadian delicacy of poutine, or French fries smothered in brown gravy and spotted with melted cheese curds. It may be difficult for attendees to tell if Angine de Poutine is actually something special or just the buzzy thing of the moment, but it’s about to be all over their Instagram feeds either way due to its packaging—much like Angine de Poitrine.

While math rock is not nearly as popular as Springsteen’s heartland rock or even Phish’s niche jam band music, the team and the band both hope to cross-pollinate their fan bases. To appeal to math rock fans, power plays will instead be referred to as 5/4 time, while the stadium’s usual Jock Jams soundtrack of AC/DC and “Welcome to the Jungle” will be replaced by In the Court of the Crimson King.

“Now if we could only find a way to attract women to the game,” the Canadiens’ spokesperson said.

APRIL FOOLS!
