LAS VEGAS, NV – OCTOBER 08: Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Earvin “Magic” Johnson addresses the crowd as he honors victims of last Sunday’s mass shooting before the team’s preseason game against the Sacramento Kings at T-Mobile Arena on October 8, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On October 1, Stephen Paddock killed at least 58 people and injured more than 450 after he opened fire on a large crowd at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. The massacre is one of the deadliest mass shooting events in U.S. history. After the game, Lakers legend (and Basketball Hall of Famer) Magic Johnson sent out several posts on X.

Johnson’s first post: “Lakers Luka Doncic put on a show tonight with 40 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds in their 124-116 win over the Houston Rockets! He had help from LeBron James who had three incredible dunks and finished with 30 points – extending their winning streak to 7.”

Johnson’s second post: “In the last week, the Lakers have beaten three Playoff teams – Denver, Minnesota and Houston twice!”

Johnson’s third post: “The Lakers are contenders in the West because of their outstanding improvement on defense. It’s been a total team effort, starting with man-to-man defense and their rotations and communication have been excellent. It says a lot about the great job JJ Redick is doing! The Lakers are the most exciting team to watch in the NBA!”

The Lakers are the third seed in the Western Conference with a 44-25 record in 69 games.

They have won seven games in a row (and nine out of their last ten).

On the road, the Lakers have gone 21-13 in 34 games away from Crypto.com Arena.

Following the Rockets, they are now headed to Miami for a showdown with Tyler Herro and the Heat on Thursday.

Doncic has been one of the biggest reasons for the Lakers looking like a legitimate contender this season.

The superstar forward is averaging 33.0 points per contest while shooting 47.5% from the field.

Legion Hoops Wrote: “LUKA DONCIC IN HIS LAST 7 GAMES: 40 PTS – 10 AST – 9 REB 36 PTS – 6 REB – 4 AST 30 PTS – 13 AST – 11 REB 51 PTS – 9 AST – 9 3PM 31 PTS – 11 REB – 11 AST 35 PTS – 8 REB – 5 3PM 44 PTS – 9 REB – 7 3PM MVP TYPE NUMBERS.”

Rockets Go Cold

The Rockets lost both games to the Lakers (and are just 4-6 over their last ten).

That said, they are still the fifth seed with a 41-27 record in 68 games.
