With the Mid-American Conference appealing Michigan football‘s win over Western Michigan on Saturday, 13-12, which has been engulfed in controversy over clock management by the officiating crew, the NCAA has responded. While the Big Ten conference has doubled down on Michigan football‘s win against Western Michigan, the NCAA has ended any hopes the Broncos had of getting a win.

As the MAC appealed the game, saying that the game should be changed in awarding Western Michigan the win, the NCAA ruled that there’s no protocol for “overturning the outcome” of a contest, according to Ross Dellenger.

“The NCAA says that the association does not have a protocol for overturning the outcome of a game, and the FBS Oversight Committee does not have authority to overturn a game outcome,” Dellenger wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Why the MAC is appealing Michigan football’s controversial win

This comes after the MAC was arguing that “replay protocol was not properly followed” in the contest at the end of the contest, and that Western Michigan should be “recognized as the winner.”

“The MAC now says that ‘replay protocol was not properly followed’ in the Western Michigan-Michigan game and the league has filed a formal appeal with the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee to be recognized as the winner,” Dellenger wrote on X.

Why the MAC feels this way stems from Saturday’s game, with nine seconds left as the Broncos were up 12-7. Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood would attempt a Hail Mary, but it was incomplete with zero seconds left on the clock.

However, the referees ruled that a Western Michigan defender touched the ball out of bounds with one second left, leading to the second Hail Mary attempt and the miraculous JJ Buchanan catch for the walk-off win.
