CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) officials report that over 20,000 students were absent from school on Monday.
While the official attendance data still needs to be finalized and approved by the state, CMS officials told Queen City News that approximately 20,935 students missed school on Monday. This makes up around 15 percent of the students enrolled in the school district, which is the 16th largest in the country.
The exact number of students absent varied across all 185 schools and student groups. We are reaching out to school officials to get the full breakdown of those absences and what those numbers look like compared to last week’s.
State education data shows that there are more than 44,000 Hispanic-identifying students in CMS.
We are also working to learn if these absences are tied to the ongoing Border Patrol operations across the city.
