New projects to expect on metro Phoenix freeways in 2026

PHOENIX — Several projects on metro Phoenix highways are expected to see work get underway in 2026, authorities said.

Seven Phoenix-area highways are scheduled for widening and other improvements, with work starting as early as January 2026, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Here’s a list of freeway projects that will see work done in 2026:

Phoenix freeway projects to see work done in 2026

Loop 303 improvement between I-17 and 51st Avenue: The $129 million project will add freeway-to-freeway ramps at the I-17/Loop 303 interchange in north Phoenix. Loop 303 will also be widened in each direction from westbound I-17 to 51st Avenue. Work is set to begin in late January and be completed by 2028, according to ADOT.

Loop 303 widening project between 51st Avenue to Lake Pleasant Parkway: The project will also see three lanes added to the Loop 303 in each direction. Work is scheduled to begin in fall 2026.

Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) widening project between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive: The $108 million project in Scottsdale will add new northbound and southbound lanes along a 4.5-mile span of the Loop 101. Work began in January 2024 and will be completed in early 2026.

Loop 303 improvement project from Van Buren Street to Maricopa County 85: The project will see work being done on Loop 303 along four miles of the Cotton Lane corridor. Three lanes will be added in each direction between Van Buren Street and Lower Buckeye Road. The project will also add two lanes in each direction between Lower Buckeye Road and Maricopa County 85. The project is set to start in mid-2026 and be completed by 2030.

I-10/Loop 101 interchange project in the West Valley: A new elevated bridge will be added to include HOV lanes between the I-10 and Loop 101 to and from Downtown Phoenix. A ramp will also be built that will allow drivers headed southbound on Loop 202 to reach 91st Avenue south of I-10. The project is expected to start this spring and last three years.

Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) widening project from I-17 to 75th Avenue: The $140 million project, which started in started in September 2024, will see two new lanes being built in each direction along a 6.5-mile span of the Loop 101 in the northwest Valley. The project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2027.

Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) widening project from Loop 101 to Val Vista Drive: The $200 million project in Chandler and Gilbert began in August 2024. Two lanes will be added in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road. One lane in each direction will also be added between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive, as well as freeway bridges being widened. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
