When the Business of Cannabis: New York Summit convenes at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg on November 6, more than 300 policymakers, investors, and executives will gather to assess one of the world’s most dynamic cannabis markets. Presented by Prohibition Partners, the event will serve as both a networking hub and a strategic forum for those shaping the state’s fast-developing cannabis economy.

A Market Maturing in Real Time

Now in its fourth year, the Summit has grown into a cornerstone event for East Coast cannabis professionals. This year’s focus is depth over breadth marking a move toward fostering genuine dialogue among industry stakeholders. “A key difference will be the industry roundtables during the morning session,” said Matt Freemantle, Managing Director of Media & Events at Prohibition Partners. “We wanted to add a layer of incredibly high-level engagement so delegates walk away having gotten under the skin of the various challenges and opportunities facing the market right now.” Those challenges and opportunities will be framed around five central themes: licensing pace, policy flux, funding paths, transparency, and branding. Collectively, they capture the tension between market expansion and the steady march toward standardization and compliance.

Policy, Preparation, and Pragmatism

New York’s regulatory structure remains in motion, and with it comes uncertainty for operators and investors alike. Rather than focus on a single policy issue, Freemantle and his team designed the program to strengthen the industry’s adaptability. “We thought it was important to navigate the broader issue of regulatory changes rather than dive into one specific part,” he said. “We want retailers and businesses to build their knowledge base so they are as robustly prepared as possible to overcome unforeseen hurdles.” Speakers like L. Simone Washington, Chief Equity Officer at the New York Office of Cannabis Management; Joanne Wilson, CEO of Gotham; and Paul Yau, CEO of The Travel Agency, will bring front-line experience to discussions about policy implementation, consumer behavior, and brand development.

Connecting Ideas to Action

Beyond being a lecture circuit, the Summit is designed as an incubator for collaboration. “Education is one thing, but it’s often the people themselves who open the doors you need to go through,” Freemantle noted. Attendees can expect direct interaction with investors, retailers, and innovators across curated sessions that prioritize shared problem-solving over surface-level networking. That global network of peers is crucial for events such as this. As a division of Prohibition Partners, Business of Cannabis leverages international relationships built across Europe and North America to connect regional operators with global capital and expertise. A Global Stage, a Local Focus

Freemantle sees New York as the emerging epicenter of global cannabis finance and innovation. “Ever since the New York market came online, we knew we had to be there,” he said. “As the future U.S., perhaps global, capital of cannabis strategically, it’s an obvious move.” Ahead of the Summit, Prohibition Partners will release a one-off market forecast exploring projected growth in the New York region—another sign that the city’s cannabis sector is maturing into a financial and cultural powerhouse. “The conversation at conferences is shifting from ‘what could be’ to ‘what is,’” Freemantle said. “To see key industry players emerging in real time and to be there alongside them as partners. That’s what makes this moment so exciting.”
