When more than 100,000 fans return to Ohio Stadium this fall, the sheer density of mobile devices will strain local cellular networks. To keep the Buckeye faithful connected, Ohio State is executing a major digital upgrade ahead of the 2026 season, headlined by a comprehensive overhaul of the stadium’s Wi-Fi network.
According to a recent social media announcement from Ohio State IT, crews are installing new network access points throughout the stadium to deliver significantly faster Wi-Fi speeds. For fans in the stands, this upgrade means smoother photo and video sharing, easier score checking across the college football landscape, and uninterrupted communication from kickoff to the final whistle.
Ohio Stadium is no stranger to setting the bar for connectivity. The stadium’s first comprehensive fan-facing Wi-Fi network was installed during the 2019 offseason. Wiring a nearly 100-year-old open-bowl stadium without overhangs is a notoriously difficult engineering challenge. The 2019 design team solved this by pulling 47 miles of copper and fiber wire and hiding hundreds of the 2,000 new access points inside custom handrail enclosures engraved with the Ohio State logo.
The investment paid off immediately. During a 2019 primetime game against Michigan State, fans consumed a staggering 25.6 terabytes of Wi-Fi data, shattering collegiate records and achieving a 71.5 percent network “take rate” (the percentage of attending fans who connected). As wireless technology has advanced over the past seven years, the 2026 installation ensures the infrastructure can handle the modern data demands of a capacity crowd.
The Wi-Fi upgrade is just one part of a broader modernization effort that is transforming the gameday experience at Ohio Stadium. Over the next two seasons, fans will see significant visual and audio enhancements:
-
2026 Enhancements: A $6.5 million project is underway to replace the north end zone video board, which hasn’t seen a major update since its 2009 installation. This phase also introduces new east and west ribbon boards spanning the field from end zone to end zone, updated B-Deck video displays, and a modernized stadium audio system.
-
2027 Overhaul: Looking ahead to next year, the university plans an even larger $22 million project to replace the main south end zone scoreboard — last upgraded in 2012 — and to add new advertising displays and additional audio enhancements.
