In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 14, 2026), we share three quick recaps from around the NHL, and they all have one thing in common: people are either sleeping on certain players or overthinking what’s next.
First, the Oilers’ Evan Bouchard is getting way more criticism than he deserves, even though he’s improved a ton and his numbers back it up. Then the Panthers’ Brad Marchand is dealing with “last-minute” offseason surgery stuff that could mess with his timing and Florida’s plans. And finally, there’s the wild superteam idea. Could McDavid and Matthews team up to chase a Cup? It sounds impossible, but maybe it isn’t.
Evan Bouchard: unfairly roasted for a defence that’s way better than people say
Evan Bouchard’s gotten way more flak than he should, even though he’s clearly levelled up defensively in Edmonton. That’s especially true after Mattias Ekholm arrived. He still makes the occasional mistake (no elite puck-moving defender is perfect), but the criticism gets loud because the Oilers haven’t always had goaltending that covers up those errors.
Meanwhile, his stats are basically impossible to ignore. Last season he put up huge point production, ran the power play well, and was solid on the penalty kill too. People argue he’s only good because he plays with McDavid and Draisaitl, but that claim doesn’t hold up. His impact doesn’t disappear, and he’s also been a monster in the playoffs. The bottom line is that the narrative around him is at odds with the reality of his game.

Marchand’s offseason surgery might throw off the start of his season
Brad Marchand ended up needing surgery for lingering lower-body issues (sounds like a hip and a sports hernia). He tried to avoid it and hoped he’d be fine, but it got to the point where he had to go under anyway. So he’ll miss a charity game, and there’s some real question about whether he’s ready for the 2026-27 season kickoff.
This injury story started late last season; Florida basically managed him through the season and even got him to the Winter Olympics with Team Canada. But once he came back, things didn’t hold up, and he was shut down. Now, with him slotted on Florida’s third line at training camp and the Panthers having basically no cap wiggle room (and likely needing LTIR rules to help), any missed time could create some roster headaches.

Could McDavid and Matthews Actually Team Up? The superteam idea nobody can stop thinking about
An analyst basically threw out a wild “what if”: What if Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews teamed up on the same roster to chase a Stanley Cup together? The whole point is that, since the cap situation could work out and there are teams with money/cap room, it wouldn’t be totally impossible—especially if they both wanted to coordinate their next moves (they’ve even got shared representation).
That said, it’s still ambitious. Even if they got together, the NHL doesn’t work like the NBA. Two superstars don’t automatically equal a title, as McDavid and Draisaitl are a reminder. Both are getting older, so the timing must be right for it to turn from fantasy into reality.
