SAN ANTONIO — The organization responsible for providing housing assistance to needy San Antonians has enacted a leadership shakeup.
Opportunity Home (formerly the San Antonio Housing Authority) announced Wednesday night that its six-member board of commissioners voted to end President/CEO Ed Hinojosa Jr’s contract and appoint Michael Reyes as its acting head, effective immediately.
“The city’s housing crisis requires steadfast and hands-on leadership that consists of innovative approaches that are built around the people we serve,” Opportunity Home commissioners said in a press release, adding they want to focus on financial stability and strengthening longstanding community partnerships.
Reyes, a graduate of Southern Methodist University and Georgetown who later managed briefings for the U.S. House of Representatives, was previously the public affairs officer for the 87-year-old organization. In their statement, the commissioners empowered Reyes to “take immediate bold action to safeguard our families and find creative solutions to the challenges the organization is facing.”
According to the San Antonio Board of Realtors, a single-family home in the Alamo City went for an average of $378,171 in April, up 3% from the same month last year. And the city’s annual Housing Commission report for 2023 spotlights the issue of rising rent and home interest rates, challenges that Mayor Ron Nirenberg discussed in his State of the City address this spring.
