San Antonio is set to experience atmospheric conditions that can produce high levels of ozone air pollution, the city says.
SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has announced an Ozone Action Day for Saturday – the first of 2024 for San Antonio – saying those with breathing problems should take safeguards.
Metro Health said San Antonio is set to experience atmospheric conditions that can produce high levels of ozone air pollution in the area.
“On Ozone Action Days, young children, older adults, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities,” Metro Health said in a release. “Those who have asthma or difficulty breathing are strongly encouraged to stay indoors.”
In order to keep our air healthy, health officials have shared the following pollution-reducing activities that they encourage residents and businesses to practice:
- Waiting until after 6 p.m. to gas up cars and trucks.
- Avoiding the drive-thru at restaurants and going inside instead.
- Turning a vehicle completely off instead of idling.
- Setting thermostats two to three degrees higher between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Setting programmable thermostats to higher temperatures when no one is home; the optimum energy-saving temperature is 78 degrees.
- Carpooling or using public transportation.
- Combining errands to reduce trips.
