TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —Magic Valley families spent Father’s Day dancing, eating and celebrating Latino culture at City Park.
99.1 La Perrona radio host Benjamin Reed launched the event in 2014 to mark the first anniversary of the radio station. The festival started in Jerome before moving to Twin Falls’ City Park.
“Within the Latino culture, particularly within the Mexican culture, the family is extremely important. The dad is a figurehead. He is there. And everything kind of revolves around him,” Reed said.
Reed said the goal has always been to give back.
“We wanted to kind of use this as an opportunity to mark the occasion and also enjoy some great entertainment. And it’s again, it’s our way of giving back to the community and getting out there and doing something nice and family friendly,” Reed said.
Reed said events like Perrona Fest shine a light on the growing economic footprint of the Latino community in Idaho.
“This is an opportunity to showcase Latino commerce here in Idaho. They are a huge factor within our economy — $2.1 billion GDP in Idaho alone,” Reed said.
After 12 years, Reed said the reward is simple.
“I wouldn’t do it if it weren’t successful. But we do this again because we love smiles. We love our audience. We love our faithful listeners,” Reed said.
Organizers said they plan to keep the Father’s Day tradition going.
