Once signed by the governor, The SUNNY Act will enable New Yorkers to buy and install small, affordable portable plug-in solar appliances that can be placed in a sunny spot on a balcony, deck, or in your yard and plugged into a wall outlet to provide solar power for your home or apartment.
The law sets safety standards to ensure that plug-in solar appliances sold to consumers in New York are safe to use with your home or apartment’s wiring and that if the utility power goes out, that the appliance cannot send power to the street and endanger line workers.
Consumers who install a plug-in solar appliance will have to let their electric utility know they are using it, but the utility is not allowed to charge any fees or restrict your use of the appliance.
Once the law takes effect and national testing labs finalize standards for plug-in solar, The Sunny Act will help more New Yorkers power more of their lives with solar with relatively little expense or hassle.

More rooftop solar, less red tape
In many communities, it can take days, weeks or even months to get a straightforward rooftop solar installation approved. It doesn’t need to be this way.
