Pelissero notes the following picks are headed to Kansas City in exchange for the All-Pro corner:

The acquisition cannot be made official until the new league year on March 11th at 4:00 eastern time.

This is effectively LA’s first step in revamping their cornerback room following the position group’s struggles over the 2025 season. Only Emmanuel Forbes, Darious Williams, and Josh Wallace remain under contract. Williams is a likely cut candidate. Wallace is a slot player. Forbes has struggled and the Rams must make a decision this offseason whether they will accept or decline his fifth-year option as a former first round pick.

In other words, this is only the first ball to drop in terms of the changes in store at corner.

The Rams paid a hefty price to bring in McDuffie. They are trading four draft selections that would each be cost-controlled for a minimum of four years. Les Snead and Sean McVay are sending strong signals that they are going all in to win a Super Bowl in 2026 rather than building for the future.

It’s a continuation of the Rams’ “F them picks” strategy that earned them trips to the Super Bowl in 2018 and 2021. LA sent a late first round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Brandin Cooks. Snead also traded two first round picks to the Detroit Lions along with Jared Goff in order to upgrade at quarterback and land Stafford. They later acquired Von Miller from the Denver Broncos at the cost of a second round selection.

The next step is likely to work out a multi-year contract extension with McDuffie, which is the main reason why the Chiefs felt compelled to move on despite enjoying a current Super Bowl window of their own.

Some Rams fans will have reservations surrounding the trade given the cost of draft capital and the pending extension. There remain questions of whether McDuffie fits the Rams defense. He has performed better in the slot than on the perimeter. The Rams are in need of outside corners after re-signing Quentin Lake as the slot corner during the regular season.

We are watching Snead and McVay again push the chips to the middle of the table in order to make another Super Bowl push. The Rams just acquired a two-time NFL All-Pro player that will immediately improve their defense. While the cost to acquire and sign McDuffie to an extension will be steep, he’s still much better than LA’s other options at corner or anyone who played for them last season.
