The Boston Red Sox have done pretty much all of their work so far this offseason on the trade market, with their latest move seeing them land Willson Contreras in exchange for right-handed pitchers Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita.

After making several moves to shore up their pitching staff early this offseason, the front office is turning its attention to adding to the team’s lineup. Contreras is a steady-hitting first baseman, as he posted a .257 batting average with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs for the Cardinals in 2025.

Boston didn’t have to give up too much to land Contreras, which made this a very appealing deal for the team. According to a report, though, the Sox had some competition for Contreras’ services on the trade market, as the New York Mets also made a push to bring him to town before this deal was finalized.

“The Mets tried for Willson Contreras before he went to the Red Sox,” Heyman reported. “That was new Cardinals honcho Chaim Bloom’s third trade with Boston, which makes sense since he’s familiar with their system.”

Even with the arrival of Contreas, the Red Sox could still use another big bat or two to come in and help out their lineup. Alex Bregman is still up for grabs in free agency, and the team continues to be linked to Arizona Diamondbacks’ second baseman Ketel Marte in trade rumors.

Considering how Boston faced some competition for Contreras, it did well to find a way to bring him to town. However, the front office’s work can’t be done just yet, and it will be interesting to see what its next move ends up being.
