After a poor start to his tenure in Houston, the Rockets are said to be exploring ways to move on from Dorian Finney-Smith.

The Houston Rockets are expected to make changes this summer, looking to build a stronger roster after a fifth-place finish in the Western Conference last season. According to The Stein Line, those changes could include trading “3-and-D” wing Dorian Finney-Smith.

After shooting 41% from 3-point range with the Nets and Lakers during the 2024-25 season, Finney-Smith appeared to be a steal, signing a four-year $52.7 million deal with the Rockets last summer. Unfortunately for Houston, the former Florida Gator turned in the worst season of his career in his first year with the Rockets. After missing the first 27 games of the season due to injury, Finney-Smith had trouble finding his footing, averaging just 3.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, one assist and 0.4 steals in 37 games. His career-low 27% success rate from 3-point range made it quite difficult for head coach Ime Udoka to find him minutes.

For these reasons and a desire to clear cap space, Stein reported that the Rockets are “exploring the trade market for avenues to move on” from Finney-Smith. The 10-year veteran has three years remaining on his deal, two of which are non-guaranteed.
