Dive Brief:

  • Save A Lot announced Wednesday the launch of Ahorra Mucho, a new discount store catering specifically to Hispanic shoppers.
  • Located in Aurora, Colorado, the new discount format carries a unique Hispanic product assortment and services that aim to bolster shopper loyalty.
  • Save A Lot, in partnership with Leevers Supermarkets, plans to continue rolling out store concepts like Ahorra Mucho as test-and-learn facilities to eventually launch more Hispanic-specific store formats.

Dive Insight:

Ahorra Mucho — which translates to “Save a lot” — was created in collaboration with employee-owned grocery operator Leevers in an ongoing effort to develop grocery formats geared toward Hispanic shoppers across the U.S.

Ahorra Mucho marks the first concept in this partnership and serves as a store and innovation center. The location features a full-service circular meat counter in the center of the store, highlighting a “cornerstone of Hispanic cooking and key battleground for winning the hearts of Hispanic shoppers,” according to the announcement.

Like other Leevers stores, Ahorra Mucho will be entirely employee-owned.

“With the Hispanic population in the United States rapidly growing and wielding considerable buying power, it is essential to understand their unique culinary traditions and preferences. Ahorra Mucho provides us with a great platform to align with Hispanic consumers’ culinary preferences and needs,” Jorge Gonzalez, director of Ahorra Mucho and member of the Leevers team, said in a statement.

In a recent report, Coresight Research forecasts the Hispanic and Latino population in the U.S. to increase by almost 6.5 million people by 2028, which will lead to an uptick in demand for ethnic products and drive the expansion of specialty grocers.
