See what metro Atlanta's new mini IKEA will look like

Swedish furniture maker IKEA announced Thursday that it’s planning to open a new format store in Alpharetta, Georgia this summer.

Why it matters: The smaller “plan and order point” store will be the second IKEA location in the metro Atlanta.

Context: Atlanta’s first IKEA opened in Midtown’s Atlantic Station neighborhood in 2005.

What to expect: IKEA Alpharetta will be a 4,306 square feet, space at Mansell Crossing, a shopping center at 7681 North Point Pkwy.

  • At this new store, customers can work with experts for design assistance in their kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Customers can also order furniture and other home goods for delivery.

Yes, but: No Swedish meatballs at this new metro Atlanta store — it won’t have a restaurant like large-format IKEA stores do, according to a spokesperson.

Zoom out: IKEA is opening similar smaller stores this year in cities like Austin and Charlotte.

The big picture: The plan and order points are part of Ikea’s $2.2 billion strategy to make its ready-made furniture more accessible, as Axios’ Asher Price reported.

What they’re saying: “It’s all about bringing the magic of IKEA closer to customers, making it easier and more affordable to access our home furnishing products and solutions,” said IKEA U.S. CEO & chief sustainability officer Javier Quiñones in a statement.

The bottom line: IKEA U.S. market manager Brandon Lomax said in a statement that he hopes this means there will “no more trekking through that notorious Atlanta traffic.”

  • “Now you can enjoy IKEA and our inspiring home design with less hassle,” said Lomax.
