SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) — Sugar Land has little room to grow, with only 4% of its land left undeveloped, ABC13’s partners at the Houston Chronicle reported.
City officials said they received 148 requests for proposals from businesses in the last fiscal year but responded to only seven.
Devon Rodriguez, the city’s development director, said only a few areas remain available for development.
“We have about 4% of our land undeveloped, so it’s just a few vacant areas,” Rodriguez said. “We have other jurisdictions that butt up against us, which I think is somewhat unique when you think about Houston because you kind of think about continuous growth, but we are pretty much built out.”
Because of that, Rodriguez said the city is focusing on redevelopment projects, including the Imperial Historic District, Lake Pointe, and the Sugar Land Town Square.
For new growth, the city’s economic development and redevelopment team said it is selective about which business proposals it responds to.
“If we have the requirements and criteria that are asked for in those requests for proposals, then we’ll put forth a response saying these are the different real estate options that we have, these are the specific sites; these are all the attributes in Sugar Land of what we have to offer,” Rodriguez said. “But we’re only going to respond to those requests for proposals if we have something to offer to that business.”
Officials said they are now moving forward with two of those projects.
