A Pew Research Center survey released Friday about the 2026 midterms found that just 24 percent of registered Latino voters approve of Donald Trump’s job as president, a 14-point drop from the start of his second term.

In addition, from February 2025 to October 2026, approval among 2024 Latino Trump voters fell from 93 percent to 57 percent — a 36-point drop. Trump’s approval rating among 2024 Latino Kamala Harris voters is now 1 percent, down from 5 percent.

Trump is also shaping how registered Latino voters approach the midterms. Fifty-five percent see their congressional vote as a vote against him, 14 percent as a vote for him, and 30 percent say he isn’t much of a factor. In 2022, by contrast, 48 percent said Joe Biden played no role in their choice, with 26 percent for him and 23 percent against him.

For those Latino voters backing Democratic House candidates, 84 percent see their vote as opposing Trump. On the Republican side, 46 percent say their vote is for Trump, and another 46 percent say he isn’t much of a factor.

Latino voters backing Democratic House candidates are also more engaged than four years ago, with 77 percent saying it really matters who controls Congress, up from 58 percent in 2022.

The survey also said that 70 percent of registered Latino voters believe the Trump administration’s policies have been harmful to Latinos, with only 12 percent saying they have been helpful and 16 percent saying they have had no effect.

According to the survey, 61 percent of registered Latino voters believe things have gotten worse for Latinos in the U.S. over the past year, compared with 11 percent who say they have improved and 26 percent who see no change.

The economy ranks as the top midterm issue for registered Latino voters, with 86 percent calling it very important for their vote. That holds across party lines: 89 percent of those backing Democratic House candidates and 78 percent of those backing Republicans say the same.

What We’re Watching

Rooftop Solar in Puerto Rico: Years of blackouts and high electricity costs have pushed Puerto Rican households toward rooftop solar and batteries. But many families still can’t afford that protection.

This short video explores how these systems keep essentials running when the grid fails and the barriers to wider access. It features Marcel Castro Sitiriche, board president of Barrio Eléctrico, a nonprofit that helps Puerto Rican households access solar power and batteries.

Jillian Melero reported and produced this for Connect Puerto Rico through the Pulitzer Center’s Digital Storytelling Accelerator, and co-published it with The Latino Newsletter.
