TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A local nonprofit is stepping in to support the LGBTQ+ community following the news of the cancellation of the Tucson Pride organization and the annual festival.
After Tucson Pride announced the cancellation of the annual Tucson Pride Festival and the organization on Jan. 21, the Latino Pride Alliance (LPA) said the nonprofit was saddened by the decision.
Now, LPA said it is stepping up for Tucsonans by continuing to engage with the LGBTQ+ community.
“Pride celebrations in Tucson have always mattered, and it is important for LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and allies who rely on safe, visible, and affirming spaces,” LPA said. “At moments like this, our community does not retreat — we step up.”
LPA announced the 2nd Annual Latino Pride Festival will take place at MSA Annex, 267 S. Avenida del Convento, on March 7. LPA’s Countdown to Pride: Valentine’s Red Party at the Sonora Events Venue, 828 N. Stone Ave., is set for Feb. 13.
“Our approach is simple: show up, stay visible, and get things done,” the press release stated. The LPA emphasizes its commitment to visibility, safety, and connection to resources for the LGBTQ+ community.
Founded in 2017, the LPA is a nonprofit organization supporting Latino LGBTQ+ youth and allies through education, health, and social services. Funds raised by the LPA focus on youth initiatives, mentorship, and providing access to critical resources, especially for Spanish-speaking families, according to a press release.
