TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The University of Arizona has been recognized as one of the first institutions in the country to earn the new Intentionally Thriving Institution designation from the Seal of Excelencia, according to Excelencia in Education.

This prestigious seal is awarded to institutions making a significant impact on Latino student outcomes. Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education, emphasized that the seal is a rigorous, data-driven certification.

“The University of Arizona earned the seal by going beyond enrollment to intentionally support Latino, and all students in their pursuit of success,” Santiago said.

The University of Arizona, designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education in 2018, boasts an enrollment of 14,140 Hispanic or Latino students, accounting for over a quarter of its total enrollment.

“The recertification for our Seal of Excelencia and Intentionally Thriving Institution designation honors and celebrates the outcomes of our commitment to student success,” said Marla Franco of the U of A Office of the Provost.

The university’s programs and policies have led to a steady increase in graduation and retention rates among Hispanic or Latino students. The six-year graduation rate rose from 59.8% in 2021 to 65.8% in 2025.

“This recertification affirms that student success is at the heart of everything we do at the U of A,” said Patricia Prelock, provost and chief academic officer.

The university offers various programs, such as Upward Bound and Project Outreach FAMILIA, to prepare students for college, as well as scholarships like the U of A Hispanic Alumni Club’s First-Year Tuition Scholarship.

Aimée Chavez, a doctoral student, shared her experience, saying, “Working with HSI Initiatives definitely influenced my decision to go to graduate school.”

The U of A’s commitment to supporting Hispanic and Latino students continues to make a significant impact, fostering a thriving and inclusive educational environment.
