Waymo opens robotaxi rides to anyone with the app in Houston

HOUSTON – Houston, your next rideshare might not have a driver.

Waymo has expanded rider access in Houston, meaning anyone who has the Waymo app can now request one of the company’s autonomous vehicles.

That means you no longer need a special invitation or early-access status to give a robotaxi a try. If you have the app, you can request a ride.

And yes, that means you could soon find yourself sitting in the back seat, watching Houston traffic while the car does the driving.

So, how does it work?

Waymo’s vehicles use cameras, sensors and other technology to navigate roads and make driving decisions without a human behind the wheel.

Riders request a trip through the Waymo app, just like they would with a traditional rideshare service. Once a vehicle arrives, passengers can hop in and let the car take it from there.

The company says the expansion gives more Houstonians a chance to experience autonomous transportation for themselves.
