What the Latino Community Needs to Hear in the State of the Union

WASHINGTON, DC — Ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement:

“Over the past year, Hispanic voters and Americans nationwide have been disheartened and horrified by what they have seen so far from the Trump administration, and they have been frustrated by the lack of oversight from the congressional majorities.

“There is no telling what kind of falsehoods or distorted reality we may hear during tonight’s State of the Union, but Hispanic voters have told us what they want to hear: they want President Trump to change course from his harmful economic policies and finally focus on pocketbook issues, such as making health care more affordable and tackling the rising cost of living for all Americans. They especially want President Trump to end his failed mass deportation campaign, which has eroded fundamental rights, resulted in the killing of U.S. citizens, wreaked havoc on families, created terror at schools and houses of worship, and made everyone less safe.

“Fixing the economy and backing off the extreme mass deportation campaign are what Latinos want President Trump to do. Numerous polls, including UnidosUS’s, prove it — the president’s approval rating is at an all-time low with our community.

“If President Trump won’t change course, Latino voters want Congress to step up and fulfill its constitutional duty and finally rein in the Department of Homeland Security by placing clear and enforceable guardrails that protect civil rights and due process.”
