The White Sox have cleaned house as they start another rebuild on the South Side.
The big picture: Last year was a mess. New GM Chris Getz is charged with cleaning up after Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams, who were both fired before the end of the season.
Who’s out: Dylan Cease, Tim Anderson, Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn, Yasmani Grandal, Liam Hendriks and others.
Who’s still in: Luis Robert, Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Andrew Vaughn and Eloy Jimenez.
Strengths: Luis Robert. The young centerfielder took a huge step forward last year, bashing 38 home runs.
Weaknesses: Pitching staff. They traded Cease this month and sent Michael Kopech to the bullpen. The starting rotation features a who’s who of “I’ve never heard of that guy.”
The intrigue: The Sox stumble into this season with more news about stadiums than on-field talent. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf is lobbying the state to pay for a massive new ballpark in the South Loop.
- And we still haven’t seen the final police report on last year’s shooting at Guaranteed Rate.
The bottom line: The Sox are leaning on some former prospects and reclamation projects to push them forward, including shortstop Colson Montgomery and young former reliever, now Opening Day starter Garrett Crochet.
- Analysts predict the Sox will lose a lot of games.
