With telecoms giant AT&T looking to build a new global headquarters in Plano, downtown Dallas will lose one of its largest employers.

Data compiled by Downtown Dallas Inc. from various public sources puts the Fortune 500 firm as one of seven businesses with more than 1,000 employees in the city’s urban core.

AT&T on Monday did not provide the number of employees who call Whitacre Tower (208 South Akard St.) their home base. Previous Dallas Morning News reporting indicated the company had nearly 6,000 workers assigned to its downtown offices in 2022.

The Dallas Economic Development Corp. estimates AT&T has nearly 10,700 employees in the city of Dallas.

AT&T CEO John Stankey sent a memo to employees Monday that the firm would build a campus on 54 acres at 5400 Legacy Drive in Plano, the site of the former Electronic Data Systems campus.

Stankey said that the company is targeting partial occupancy for the new headquarters “as early as the second half of 2028.”

Its lease at the 37-story Whitacre Tower at 208 S. Akard St. runs through Dec. 31, 2031, AT&T said.

The data below doesn’t include exact employee counts and is based on the most recent reports. These counts include only the number of employees based in downtown Dallas.

Downtown Dallas is defined as the portion of the city bound by Interstate 35-E, Interstate 30, Interstate 45 and Woodall Rodgers Freeway.

Downtown’s largest employers include finance, law firms, government agencies and more. Sources for employee counts include CoStar, Bureau of Labor Statistics, press releases and other data.
