A student housing development, along with a generous amount of retail options, is in the works off the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The San Antonio Business Journal reports Barshop & Oles Co. and Phoenix Property Co. have started construction on La Cantera Crossing, a 182-unit mixed-use development. The project is across the street from The Shops at La Cantera, an open-air shopping center located within the La Cantera District of San Antonio.

The project will be fronted by several retail buildings at the intersection of I-10 and La Cantera Parkway. Retail uses, leased by Barshop & Oles, are expected to include a mix of casual dining, retail stores and personal services.

Phoenix took out a loan from UMB Bank for an undisclosed amount as part of the transaction.

La Cantera Crossing is slated to deliver before the 2028-2029 academic year.
