Denver braces for near-record heat as a warm air mass could push temperatures to 90 degrees, nearly a month earlier than expected, with relief later in the week.

DENVER — Denver could hit 90 degrees this week — nearly a month ahead of schedule — as a warm air mass settles over the region through mid-May.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to reach the mid-80s, with conditions staying dry through Wednesday.

9NEWS Weather Impact Team meteorologist Chris Bianchi said Wednesday carries the best shot at cracking 90 degrees, which would mark a significant milestone for the city.

This story continues below.

“We’ve not officially hit 90 degrees yet in Denver,” Bianchi said. “The average first 90-plus is not until the second week of June — so if we get it [Monday] or this week, it would be about a month earlier than average.”

Before the heat peaks Wednesday, a brief disruption is expected overnight Monday into early Tuesday morning. A cold front will push through, bringing winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour around midnight, followed by a gradual warm-up.

Relief arrives later in the week. Thursday and Friday bring a chance for showers and thunderstorms, depending on the track of an approaching area of low pressure.

“Still a little TBD at this point,” Bianchi said, “But just plan on at least a chance for some showers and storms on both Thursday and Friday.”

The weekend looks mostly dry in Colorado, though some shower chances are possible. The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team is also watching next week for potentially more active weather, though details remain uncertain this far out.
