The Philadelphia Union will travel to Austin for Saturday night’s game with a full complement of Sullivans.
MLS’s Independent Review Panel upheld an appeal of Cavan Sullivan’s red card from Wednesday night’s game against Inter Miami. It also declined to levy any additional discipline against Quinn Sullivan, whose slam of Ian Fray precipitated a melee 10 minutes into stoppage time in a 2-2 draw at Subaru Park.
The discontent was sparked when Fray, the Miami outside back, stepped over Quinn Sullivan on the ground. Sullivan got up, with Fray over him, and tipped both of them onto the ground. In the ensuring pleasantries, Miami midfielder Yannick Bright and Cavan Sullivan grabbed each other’s jerseys and started shoving. Bright appeared to attempt to throw a punch. Both were shown red cards for violent conduct.
The Union disputed Cavan’s red successfully. It’s the second time this season the Union have been successful, having gotten a red card by Japhet Sery Larsen overturned after the April 25 game. Each team is allowed two unsuccessful appeals per season, playoffs included.
The MLS DisCo also levied undisclosed fines against Fray and Lionel Messi for “violating the league’s policy regarding hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent” as part of the conflict. Bright’s red card remains, and no additional discipline was handed down to Quinn Sullivan.
The Union will have both players available for Saturday’s trip to Austin. That game’s kickoff was moved back on Thursday by MLS to 9 p.m. ET, citing forecast high temperatures in Texas.
