BALTIMORE, Md. (DC News Now) — Travelers may have seen automated screening lanes at other airports across the nation, but it’s making its debut this summer at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

“We have some installed and we’re reinstalling even more throughout the summer,” said TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein. “At this point, at least two of them are installed and are in use.”

The technology uses a computed tomography scanner. TSA agents will be able to use a screen to check bags digitally, allowing them to “rotate it in all different ways and directions.”

The goal is to make the check-in process smoother, while still keeping everyone safe.

“It does help speed up security because it requires fewer bag checks,” Farbstein said.

Travelers will have to do things slightly differently when using the new technology.

“The big change for travelers is that everything goes in the bin,” Farbstein said.

The best way to get through checkpoints quickly and efficiently, without technology, is to know what’s allowed in personal items and carry-on bags.

TSA has an app that shows what is allowed.
