A new union has been formed in Central New York. Employees at Central Processors New York are now part of Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW.
Twenty employees from the facility are represented by this union and they say they are the first adult use cannabis cultivation and processing facility to unionize in New York. Workers decided to unionize for health benefits and time off. They were also able to secure a wage increase.
This move could further legitimize a new industry in the state that was illegal a short time ago. Employees say the negotiation with their employer was smooth. They join local 338 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents 600 employees in the cannabis industry.
“I think it’s a step into more [legitimacy]. People think weed is weed and it’s not a good thing, but it’s a great thing, and the union backs that and makes us enjoy it more,” said union member David Burton.
Their contract began at the end of April, and employees said they are happy for the change.
