This weekend on In Focus, we’re exploring some of the issues facing voters across the country and right here in New York ahead of Election Day.
JoDee Kenney sits down with Frankie Miranda, president & CEO of the Hispanic Federation, to talk about what’s important to this growing segment of the population.
Miranda said there has not been consistent polling of Latino voters, but surveys conducted by his organization and its partners show immigration issues are overshadowed by those ranked highly by a majority of voters in the country, namely the economy, health care and education to name a few. Miranda said rather than view Hispanic voters as a single block, it’s important to realize communities in each part of the country will have different priorities when it comes to the issues. Miranda’s advice to candidates is to listen to the Hispanic community and work to connect with them in a culturally competent manner.
The Hispanic Federation, Miranda said, has seen enthusiasm among Latino voters grow in recent months as it continues its non-partisan engagement and education. In addition to its outreach this election cycle, Miranda said the Hispanic Federation works to connect young people with career development programs as the nation’s economy shifts toward more high-tech job opportunities.
