NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Warming shelters remain open across New York on Sunday as extreme cold and below freezing temperatures persist across the Tri-State area.
A 14th person has died from the cold weather in New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced late Saturday night. It’s part of the reason why the mayor is opening another round of warming shelters, including warming buses.
Starting Sunday in Upper Manhattan, the city says the warming shelters will offer a single-room style unit. It’s been nearly a week since the city has seen above freezing temperatures.
Meanwhile, sanitation workers have been on 12-hour shifts since last Sunday. It’s been an all-hands-on-deck operation in all neighborhoods, as crews work to melt the snow. Over 67 million pounds of snow has been melted away so far, according to city officials.
Sunday’s more extreme cold could create even more challenges, raising the risk of water main breaks, including the one that made a mess in the Morrisania section of the Bronx on Saturday night.
Freezing temperatures also make it harder to dig out of the snow.
Meanwhile, alternate side parking is now suspended through Tuesday. It’s some relief for people who don’t want to deal with digging out. However, it’s not good for those with lower cars who want clean parking lanes.
Acting Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan says the city will get to places that need help, but for now, urges New Yorkers to be patient. Manhattan resident Ashley Pellet says the cold is not a surprise.
“I’m sure they’re doing everything they can, but it’s super unfortunate and honestly I’m not surprised, it’s always been an issue, but it seems like it’s getting a little bit better,” Pellet said.
“It’s one day at a time, you know. The first day it was a lot, it was beautiful. But now we’re just kind of dealing with the aftermath, and the dirt and obviously the frigid temperatures. So, it’s just a lot to handle. But I think as New Yorkers, we’re used to this.”
