As
National Poison Prevention Week (March 16-22) begins, New York State officials emphasize the importance of safe cannabis storage to prevent unintentional ingestion by children and pets.
Officials are urging cannabis consumers to
keep products locked, out of sight, and in their original child-resistant packaging. As New York’s legal cannabis market continues to grow, the officials said in a statement that each department involved wants to offer public safety through education, and responsible use remains a top priority.
“This is an important initiative that reminds New Yorkers to store their cannabis products safely and keep them away from those who should not have access,” said
Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham. “By offering educational resources and promoting best practices, we can prevent unintentional poisoning and underage use of cannabis products.”
According to the
Upstate New York Poison Center, hundreds of calls have been received regarding cannabis-related exposures, with many cases involving young children. While the calls related to children have declined, calls involving pets have increased.
Dr. Vince Calleo, Medical Director of the poison center, highlighted that illicit cannabis edibles often resemble common snacks, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion. He advised consumers to store cannabis in locked boxes or bags and to act quickly by calling 911 or a poison center in case of an emergency.
“Having young children around is an adventure filled with joy, but caregivers should stay alert,” added Dr. Mark Su, Director of the NYC Poison Center. “Young children may not recognize the difference between regular treats and cannabis-infused products, making safe storage essential.”
As part of National Poison Prevention Week, New York agencies are using social media platforms to share essential safety tips, educational resources, and information on lock bag giveaways. The initiative aligns with the annual campaign’s theme, “When the unexpected happens, Poison Help is here for you.” The Poison Help line is available 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222 and provides free and anonymous assistance for emergencies and general inquiries.
“With safety being paramount for our children, youth, and families, OCFS fully supports OCM’s reinforcement of responsible cannabis storage,” said Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Commissioner Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden. “Educating the community about the potential risks of accidental ingestion is vital to protecting our most vulnerable populations.”
New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) Acting Executive Director Felicia A.B. Reid reiterated the state’s commitment to public health and safety: “Ensuring the safety of New Yorkers, especially children and young people, is critical as the state’s legal cannabis market grows. Through collaboration with our state partners, we are reinforcing the importance of keeping cannabis products locked, out of sight, and out of reach.”

By taking proactive steps to prevent unintentional ingestion, officials hope to protect families while promoting the safe use of cannabis products throughout the state.
