SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (WLS) — ABC7 Chicago’s series, “From Pier To Pier: Celebrating 100 Years of Route 66,” cruised into California’s Inland Empire, the collection of large cities East of Los Angeles. Chiaverini’s first stop was Wigwam Village #7 in San Bernardino, one of two motels with teepee-shaped rooms on the Mother Road.
His journey brought him next to Rancho Cucamonga to see preserved landmarks like a historic Richfield service station, Magic Lamp Inn, and Sycamore Inn restaurants. A stop in Monrovia on Foothills Boulevard revealed the Aztec Hotel, a 1924 structure featuring Mayan architecture.
Rolling into South Pasadena, Chiaverini parked his 2026 Hyundai Palisade at Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain. Operations Manager Brandon Shahniani said the 111-year-old business emerged at a time when pharmacies sold carbonated water as a cure mixed with medicine.
“People rely on this place as a spot to come in and feel something nostalgic,” said Shaniani. “We were here for like a whole decade before Route 66 was even established.”
Fair Oaks sells a variety of ice cream concoctions and sundaes at its soda counter. Customers can also find dozens of varieties of classic candies for sale like Abba-Zaba and Albert’s Ice Cubes.
With less than 30 miles left on the Route, Chiaverini pulls into La La Land for his next installment in the series.
