SPRINGFIELD – Members of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus joined community organizations, advocates, and professionals at the State Capitol on May 5 and 6 for the 16th annual Latino Unity Day.
Over the two-day event, Senate members led panel discussions on topics ranging from Latino representation in government to key policy priorities. Lawmakers also delivered keynote remarks during the event’s legislative breakfast. This year’s theme, “Defending Our Rights, Building Our Future,” highlighted the need for strong advocacy as Latino communities confront challenges such as funding cuts to SNAP and federal actions affecting communities.
“The federal government somehow finds money for deportations, detentions, tax breaks for billionaires, and policies that make our communities feel less safe, but when we say we need healthcare, food funding, housing, schools, child care, and safety, we are told to wait,” said Senate Latino Caucus Chair Graciela Guzman (D-Chicago). “In spaces like this, we continue to advance policy because there are tangible things we can do at the state level.”
Panelists addressed a wide range of issues, including economic development, labor, environmental justice, immigration, and mental health. Attendees also met directly with lawmakers to raise concerns and share priorities from their communities.
“This is our home. Our people and our communities belong here,” said Senator Omar Aquino (D-Chicago). “We have done many good things, and we will continue to push the agenda. To the many here this week doing the work, it is not in vain, and we thank you.”
Participants wrapped Latino Unity Day events with the annual rally at the Lincoln Statue, where lawmakers and advocates gathered to celebrate Latino culture and contributions. During the rally, legislators honored the rapid responders for their community-based, volunteer-driven work to protect immigrants across the state last fall during Operation Midway Blitz.
“We are dedicating today to the rapid responders,” said Senator Karina Villa (D-West Chicago). “Every single one of you that stood up and said our neighbors are worth it, thank you so much for this day.”
Through events like Latino Unity Day, the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus continues to advance policies that support Latino communities across the state.
As the spring legislative session enters its final weeks, members of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus will continue advocating for a budget that strengthens and invests in underserved communities throughout Illinois.
