HOUSTON – Kevin Yackly recently showed 2 Helps You how far he had to travel from the rideshare parking area to reach the nearest accessible portable restroom at Hobby Airport. For Yackly, that meant a trek of more than 100 yards with his cane.
The reason for this problem? Rideshare drivers park on the opposite side of the lot from taxi drivers, who have parking access to the area closest to the restrooms.
Airport leadership initially said accessible restrooms were available in the rideshare lot. However, a 2 Helps You report showed this was not the case.
After seeing our reporting, we contacted City of Houston leadership. In a matter of days, and after we pushed for answers, the Houston Airport System took action.
The result was waiting for Yackly when he returned.
“Wow and clean with toilet paper,” Yackly said.
The new restroom is now just steps from where he parks, “I just can’t actually believe that it actually happened that I called out and you actually responded,” Yackly said.
Another accessibility problem remains for the disabled
The restroom may be fixed, but Yackly showed 2 Helps You another problem at Hobby Airport — the design of the disabled parking spaces.
Yackly needs to fully open his vehicle door to get out of his vehicle as he has physical limitations from his disability. The existing spaces do not provide enough room for him to this comfortably. The realistic challenge is a concern that also was expressed to us by another ridesharing driver earlier this week.
Houston Airport System Aviation Director Jim Szcznesiak instantly acknowledged the problem after seeing Yackly demonstrate it, “So we will have this fixed ASAP.”
For Yackly, the quick response on the restroom issue was proof that contacting 2 Helps You can make a difference.
“The biggest takeaway for me is you mean business and when you call people listen,” he said.
Now, the next question is when the disabled parking spaces will be fixed? We will monitor and update once complete.
Remember, 2 Helps should never be your first call but we don’t mind being your last. If you have an issue and you have tried everything to get it addressed, contact us at the Help Desk.
