LOS ANGELES – University of South Carolina baseball alum Brett Kerry has been called up by the Los Angeles Angels, the organization announced tonight (Monday, June 15). Kerry is the 62nd Gamecock to earn the call to the Major Leagues.
Kerry was 3-3 in 14 appearances and 11 starts for the Salt Lake Bees, the Angels’ Triple A affiliate this season. He has 59 strikeouts in 62.1 innings pitched. Kerry was drafted by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft and in his professional career, has 29 wins, 123 appearances, 104 starts, three saves and 557 strikeouts.
A three-year letterwinner at Carolina, Kerry was an All-America honoree by D1Baseball and the NCBWA as a junior in 2021. He was 5-1 with a 2.15 ERA and four saves while striking out 84 batters in 54.1 innings pitched. He still has the last complete-game shutout in Carolina history when he struck out 10 in a win over Kentucky on May 15, 2021. He helped the Gamecock host a regional in 2021. As a freshman in 2019, Kerry was named to the SEC All-Freshman team and was named a consensus Freshman All-American. The Clemmons, N.C., native went 4-1 with a 2.62 ERA and seven saves while striking out 65 batters in 58.1 innings pitched.
Kerry joins former Gamecock teammate TJ Shook as Gamecocks that have been called up to the Major Leagues this season.
Kerry and the Angels start a three-game series at Arizona tonight (Monday, June 15). They head to the Athletics this week and host Baltimore starting next Monday.
