The New York state Legislature on Monday passed a fifth state budget extension — now nearly three weeks past the budget’s deadline — which was sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul for her signature.
The extender runs through Wednesday and funds Medicaid, payroll, schools and other essential expenses. The budget was due April 1.
State lawmakers are expected to return to Albany on Wednesday to pass another extender.
Major differences on the governor’s proposal to reform the state’s car insurance laws and dial back the 2019 climate law remain key sticking points, as well as differences over raising taxes on the wealthy, school aid and Tier 6 pension reform. There have been frustrations among some lawmakers about the slow process.
“I’m not walking back from my belief, the priorities that New Yorkers deserve to have, the majority of them focused on affordability,” Hochul told reporters Monday.
