In January 2024, a veteran Hispanic market media executive with experience in Spanish-language radio and in Spanish-language television was selected to take the role of President of Telemundo Station Group.
At the 2025 Hispanic Radio Conference, scheduled for mid-June in Houston, José Cancela will share why there is plenty of history to help us understand how those who first paved the way did the extraordinary, helping to build the Spanish-language media landscape that exists today. How we can best continue to follow that extraordinary path will be the centerpiece of a Keynote Address Cancela will deliver at this year’s event.
Cancela has more than 35 years in leadership roles and more than four decades of media experience. He led Telemundo Puerto Rico after moving from the mainland U.S. in 2012, and helped to reinvigorate WKAQ-2 against WAPA-4 and Univision Puerto Rico, in addition to SBS’s Mega TV. Before joining WKAQ-2, he was President/GM for KVEA-52 in Los Angeles. Cancela took the Southern California job in August 2011, following a nearly 7-year run as the head of Hispanic USA Inc., working from Coral Gables, Fla., on various initiatives in the U.S. Latino marketplace. He created Hispanic USA at the end of 2024, following the end of his tenure as President of the former Radio Unica.
Today, Cancela believes that now is the time for Spanish-language broadcasters to stand tall and be extraordinary. He will provide the opening keynote at this year’s Hispanic Radio Conference, scheduled for June 11-12 in Houston.
